The Salesians of Don Bosco (or the Salesian Society, officially named the Society of St. Francis de Sales) is a Roman Catholic religious congregation founded on December 18, 1859, by St. John Bosco to help poor children in the streets, prisons, and sweatshops of Turin during the Industrial Revolution.
The Salesians’ charter describes the Society’s mission as: “the Christian perfection of its associates obtained by the exercise of spiritual and corporal works of charity towards the young, especially the poor, and the education of boys to the priesthood”. The institute is named after St. Francis de Sales, a 17th-century bishop of Geneva.
Education and evangelization are at the center of the Salesian mission, with the integral development of the person as the main thrust of their pastoral-educative services.
Salesian communities primarily operate shelters for homeless or at-risk youths; schools, colleges, and universities; technical, vocational, and language instruction centers for youths and adults; and boys’ clubs and community centers. In some areas, they run parish churches like St. John Bosco Parish & Center for Young Workers. Salesians are also active in publishing and other public communication activities, as well as mission work.
The Salesians are headed by their Rector Major and the Society’s General Council. In turn, each of the ninety-four geographical provinces in 131 countries is headed by a Provincial Superior, while each of the local Salesian communities making up a province is headed by a Rector. Luzon belongs to the FIN province along with Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, while the FIS province covers Visayas and Mindanao.
Currently, the Salesian Rector Major is Fr. Ángel Fernández Artime. Fr. Anthony Paul Bicomong, SDB, is the FIN Provincial Superior. In SJBP, the Parish priest, Fr. Roger Tamares, SDB, is also the Rector. Fr. Roger is assisted by his confreres in the local Salesian community in running the Parish and carrying out the Church’s apostolic and pastoral works.
